Sustainability Commitment
We design for the people who will inhabit these buildings in thirty years, not just the client who commissions them today.

Policy Statement
Forma Studio's commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental performance metrics. We define sustainability as the long-term fitness of a building for its purpose — encompassing environmental performance, structural durability, maintenance accessibility, community value, and adaptability to future use. A building that requires demolition after twenty years because it cannot be adapted is not a sustainable building, regardless of its energy rating.

Our Sustainability Approach
Long-Term Design Thinking
We design buildings with a minimum fifty-year performance horizon. Structural systems are selected for durability and adaptability. Material specifications prioritise longevity over short-term cost efficiency. Floor-to-floor heights are set to allow future adaptation of building services without structural intervention.
Community and Social Value
We assess the social impact of every building we design — its relationship to the public realm, its contribution to the streetscape, its accessibility to people of all abilities, and its potential to generate or diminish community value over time. We do not design buildings that serve only their occupants at the expense of the people who will live alongside them.
Climate Resilience
Our designs account for projected climate conditions over the building's operational life — increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and the need for passive cooling strategies that do not depend on mechanical systems that may not be viable in a resource-constrained future.
Supply Chain Responsibility
We seek to specify materials and systems from suppliers whose environmental and labour practices meet the standards we hold ourselves to. We do not knowingly specify products whose production involves practices we would not accept in our own studio operations.
Reporting and Accountability
We track the environmental performance of completed projects where monitoring data is available to us, and we use this data to improve the passive design strategies we apply to future commissions. We publish our sustainability commitments publicly and make ourselves accountable to them.
