Project Scope
The client commissioned a private, luxury weekend retreat situated in a remote, arid landscape. The fundamental requirement was autonomy: the villa needed to operate entirely off-grid for up to eight months of the year. The aesthetic brief called for a structure that felt deeply rooted in the desert, avoiding the stark, imported materiality of typical luxury villas.
Our Approach
The architectural response was driven by survival in a harsh climate. We utilized rammed earth construction, sourcing the aggregate directly from the site excavations to create walls up to 600mm thick. This provided immense thermal mass, absorbing the intense daytime heat and slowly releasing it during the cooler desert nights.
The roof was designed as an expansive, floating canopy that deeply shades the rammed earth volumes and exterior terraces. The geometry of the roof was precisely calculated to optimize the efficiency of an integrated, invisible photovoltaic array, while its aerodynamic profile encourages prevailing winds to flush through the central shaded courtyard.
The Solution
Designing an off-grid system of this scale required unconventional MEP coordination. We integrated a robust battery storage matrix into an insulated subterranean bunker and designed a localized greywater recycling system to irrigate the native landscaping. The structural documentation for the rammed earth required careful detailing and regulatory liaison, as it is a non-standard construction method in the jurisdiction.
The Result
The Desert Ridge Retreat is a luxurious, uncompromising architectural statement that functions harmoniously with its extreme environment. It achieves net-zero energy status during the winter and shoulder seasons, relying entirely on passive cooling and solar generation.
